The Untempered Ensemble: Capstone Performance & Recording Session

The goal of this project is to capture senior artists creating music at the height of their creative careers. It will culminate in a performance and recording session in New York with a possible preview concert in Charlottesville, Virginia. These events will be a capstone for the Untempered Ensemble and a further culmination of lifelong careers in Jazz.

After over two decades of performances and recordings, Bill Cole's Untempered Ensemble has attracted a sizable audience and is currently riding their greatest wave of recognition. The acclaimed artists in this ensemble are in their 70's and 80's, at the height of their long careers - it is a critical time to present and document their work. We are working to solidify a legacy for these veteran artists, still composing and contributing to American music. Given the age of the performers, we on the Shadrack Board are seeking to raise funds to record them playing together in the near future.

For this capstone performance and recording, The Untempered Ensemble will be performing new compositions by Bill Cole, but also Cole's new arrangements of music by noted pianist and jazz composer, the late Don Pullen. The Ensemble will focus on Pullen's compositions because they believe that it is critical to keep the work of this significant artist alive, someone who died too soon at the age of 53, and remains deserving of wider recognition.

To ensure that Cole and The Ensemble's artistry lives on beyond their time, it is crucial to professionally capture the music now. The Untempered Ensemble must perform and be recorded while they are still playing with the skill and passion for which they are known. The power of their collective talents and the eloquent compositions of this "daring visionary" should continue to be part of musical conversations in the United States for years to come.
